At the request of the Ministry of Education and Science of the Russian Federation, St. Petersburg State University (SPbU) organized an online voting on the selection of the 100 best books that would be recommended to students for extracurricular reading. Earlier, Russian President Vladimir Putin came up with the idea of ​​creating such a list. In his pre-election article on the national issue, he proposed a survey and a list of 100 books that each graduate of a Russian school would have to read independently. He also proposed to make an essay on the topics read or to hold olympiads and competitions for the final exam. This spring, polls were conducted in all regions of the country, on the basis of which regional lists of 100 books were formed for recommendations to students. Having processed these suggestions, the experts created a consolidated all-Russian list, which included books most often mentioned in regional recommendations and not included in the compulsory school curriculum, the website says. At the same time, the organizers of the voting note that the list can be supplemented and expanded by means of iconic works of literature, scientific and popular science works of Russian philosophers, art historians, scientists, politicians. The list is mainly works for high school students.
